Beefing up the bacon market has paid off for one local company.

Called the Canadian Beef Bacon, the product hit the shelves in Calgary Co-Op stores late last month.

The company’s  founder Richard Janzen believes the arrival is just the beginning. Janzen says numerous other distributors have also shown interest.

The product is considered the first of its kind in Canada and was previously sold at farmers’ markets in Calgary and Millarville.

Janzen said the product contains half the cholesterol and three-quarters  the fat found in traditional pork bacon and cooks faster as well.

“It’s a pretty amazing product,” he said.

“We have got an unbelievable amount of attention.”

Janzen said the bacon has already received rave reviews from notable public figures, among them Calgary Flames president and CEO Ken King and former federal public safety minister Stockwell Day.
